Pioneers sweep, Blues, Papermakers and Bombers win home games

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated Calumet 7-3 and 5-3 to start the season undefeated, while the Monroe Blues, Mosinee Papermakers and West Bend Bombers all get home wins.

The Pioneers never trailed during their rivalry series with Calumet, and outshot the Wolverines 79-58 in the two games. Ted and Jay Pietila led the Pioneers, combing for 14 points on the weekend.

The Papermakers moved to 1-1 with the victory over Eagle River, a game that included a three-goal outburst by the Papermakers in the second period. Greg Hanson led the team with a goal and three assists. 

Mosinee 6, Eagle River 3

Monroe jumped out to a 6-0 lead in their home opener against De Pere. Five players on the Blues had three points, including Tom Rane, who had a hat trick in the contest. Christian Blick made 45 saves to earn the victory.

Last year’s GLHL South Division scoring leader Scott Holtz scored 28 seconds into overtime for the West Bend Bombers as they defeated Eagle River.
